Spleen ultrasound
Spleen ultrasound is a modern, completely painless and highly accurate examination. It focuses on this often neglected organ in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen, which plays an important role in the immune system and blood filtration. At Hello Beauty Clinic, we perform spleen sonography as a separate diagnostic or in combination with the examination of other abdominal organs. The entire process takes 15 to 30 minutes, is radiation-free, and the doctor will discuss the results with you immediately on the spot. An ideal choice for preventive screening even in case of specific problems.
The role of the spleen in the body and why it should be monitored
The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ in the human body and performs several key functions in the immune system and blood circulation. It continuously filters the blood, removes old, damaged or deformed red blood cells, stores platelets and participates in the immune response through white blood cells for a rapid response to infection or bleeding. At the same time, it actively participates in the formation of antibodies and the recognition of foreign antigens.
In adults, the spleen usually weighs 140–160 grams and is shaped like a fist. It lies in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen under the costal arch.
Spleen disorders often develop inconspicuously and only become apparent at a more advanced stage. The most common include spleen enlargement, which accompanies infectious diseases (e.g. mononucleosis), chronic liver diseases (cirrhosis), blood disorders (hemolytic anemia) or hematological diseases (leukemia). We also encounter cysts, hematomas after blunt abdominal trauma, splenic infarctions due to vascular occlusions, and focal changes of both benign and malignant nature.
The spleen is extremely sensitive to mechanical trauma - rupture can lead to massive internal bleeding, which is life-threatening.
Regular ultrasound of the spleen allows for early and non-invasive detection of these changes, often before clinical symptoms develop. This allows for timely intervention, adjustment of treatment, or monitoring of development, and the prevention of serious complications such as hypersplenism (excessive retention of blood cells), chronic anemia, or in extreme cases, the need for surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy). Prevention and early diagnosis play a crucial role in maintaining the full function of this important organ.

What does a spleen ultrasound reveal
High-end ultrasound devices provide a detailed image of the size, shape, structure and blood supply of the spleen. Our doctors assess the homogeneity of the parenchyma and any abnormalities.
Possible findings include:
- Splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen)
- Cysts or pseudocysts
- Focus changes (benign and malignant)
- Splenic infarctions or hematomas
- Symptoms of portal hypertension

When is a spleen examination appropriate
We recommend a spleen ultrasound especially in the case of subtle but persistent symptoms that may indicate spleen damage. These include a feeling of pressure, fullness or dull pain in the left lower abdomen, especially when taking a deep breath, after eating or when changing position. Unexplained chronic fatigue, increased tendency to bruise, prolonged bleeding from minor injuries or repeated infections often occur, which indicate a weakened immune response. These symptoms tend to be subtle, so it is important not to underestimate them.
Examination is also necessary if an enlarged spleen has already been detected during a physical examination or if there are abnormalities in the blood count - for example, anemia, thrombocytopenia (reduced platelet count) or leukopenia (reduced white blood cell count). These laboratory findings often indicate that the spleen is excessively retaining or destroying blood cells.
This examination plays a key role in patients with chronic liver disease. Furthermore, in blood disorders, hematological diseases (lymphomas, leukemia), after having had infectious mononucleosis or if portal hypertension is suspected. Preventive sonography is appreciated by everyone with risk factors - for example, long-term alcohol use, chronic viral hepatitis or after blunt abdominal injuries. Early control allows monitoring of development and intervention before more serious complications occur.
Spleen Care
The spleen is a sensitive organ that you can support with simple lifestyle changes and prevention. Although it is not as often discussed as the liver or heart, its proper function contributes to strong immunity, healthy blood counts and overall vitality.
- Avoid risk factors
Limit excessive alcohol consumption, which burdens not only the liver but also the spleen. Smoking impairs blood circulation and immune response. Use protective equipment when playing sports or doing physical activities with a risk of abdominal injury - the spleen is prone to rupture during falls or impacts. - Support immunity and blood counts
A diet rich in iron (red meat, spinach, legumes), vitamin C and folate (leafy vegetables) help maintain healthy blood cell production. Sufficient fluid intake supports blood filtration. A balanced diet with a limit of excess fats and sugars reduces the risk of spleen enlargement in metabolic disorders. - Infection prevention
Regular vaccination (against pneumococci, meningococci, Haemophilus influenzae). Maintain hygiene and avoid contact with infectious diseases such as mononucleosis, which often leads to temporary enlargement of the spleen. - Regular check-ups
If you have chronic liver diseases, blood disorders or have had infections, have your spleen checked regularly with ultrasound. Early detection of changes allows for gentle intervention and lifestyle changes are often enough.
At our clinic, we will be happy to advise you on how to incorporate spleen care into your prevention. A healthy spleen contributes to stronger immunity and a greater sense of energy - it is worth paying attention to it.
