Ultrasound of the pleural cavity
Ultrasound of the pleural cavity (pleural cavity sonography) is a modern, painless and very sensitive examination. It focuses on the space between the lungs and the chest wall, where there is normally only a thin layer of fluid. The examination is completely radiation-free, takes 15 to 30 minutes and the doctor will discuss the results with you immediately. Ideal for quickly clarifying breathing difficulties or suspected effusion.
The importance of the pleural cavity
The pleural cavity (pleural space) is a slit-like space between two membranes – the visceral pleura (covers the lungs) and the pleura (covers the chest wall). It normally contains only a few milliliters of fluid, which allows the lungs to move smoothly during breathing.
Pleural cavity disorders are most often manifested by the accumulation of fluid (pleural effusion), air or inflammation. These conditions can be caused by infections, heart failure, cancer, pulmonary embolism or autoimmune diseases. Shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens when breathing in or coughing often occur.
Ultrasound of the pleural cavity is a highly sensitive method for detecting fluid and allows for early intervention.
What an ultrasound of the pleural cavity reveals
Modern ultrasound devices provide excellent imaging of the pleural space. Our doctors assess the volume, nature of the effusion and surrounding anatomical structures.
Possible findings include:
- Pleural effusion (excessive fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall)
- Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
- Pleural thickening or fibrous adhesions
- Pleural nodules or masses
- Signs of inflammation or infection

When is a pleural cavity examination appropriate
Pleural cavity sonography is recommended especially in cases of dyspnea of unclear origin, which occurs suddenly or gradually worsens. Furthermore, in cases of sharper chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, coughing or changing position, with a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the chest or with a dry irritating cough. The examination is also invaluable in cases of suspected pleural effusion, which was indicated on a chest X-ray or other imaging methods.
This examination plays a key role in serious diseases of the heart muscle (e.g. congestive cardiomyopathy), lung diseases (pneumonia, pulmonary embolism), chest tumors, autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus) or after chest injuries.
Preventive sonography will be appreciated by people at increased risk – long-term smokers, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, heart problems or those who have had repeated respiratory infections. Regular check-ups allow for early detection of even minimal changes, thus preventing the development of more serious complications.
Why choose sonography with us
The examination is completely safe for patients of all ages. We do not use any ionizing radiation, so it can be repeated without any risks as often as needed to monitor development or check after treatment.
Our clients most often appreciate the short waiting times for an appointment, immediate evaluation of results on site and the friendly, professional approach of the entire team. The option to book an examination without a request from a general practitioner is also very welcome. We strive to create a calm environment where you feel safe and where we will explain everything clearly and with enough time for your questions.
We perform each examination with utmost care, detailed assessment and consideration of differential diagnosis, so that nothing important is missed.
Ultrasound of the pleural cavity is therefore the first and most gentle step in any suspected pleural disease. It is often sufficient to quickly rule out more serious problems or to accurately determine the next course of action.

How to take care of your pleural cavity health
The pleural cavity and pleura are sensitive structures that protect the lungs and allow them to move smoothly during breathing. Even if you do not directly affect the pleural space, you can significantly support lung health and prevent conditions that lead to effusion or inflammation.
- Stop smoking
Smoking is a major risk factor for pleurisy, lung diseases, and chest tumors. Quitting significantly reduces the risk of pleural complications and improves overall respiratory system function. - Strengthen your immunity and prevent infections
Sufficient intake of vitamins (C, D, zinc), a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and regular exercise support resistance to respiratory infections, which often lead to pleurisy or effusion. Vaccination against influenza, pneumococci, and COVID-19 is especially important for risk groups. - Take care of your heart and blood vessels
Regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks, a balanced diet with salt restrictions and plenty of exercise help keep your heart in shape and reduce the risk of congestive conditions. - Breathe clean air and avoid irritants
Ventilate regularly, use air purifiers in polluted environments and protect yourself from dust, chemicals or mold. Deep breathing exercises or yoga support lung ventilation and prevent adhesions in the pleura. - Regular check-ups for risk conditions
If you have chronic diseases (heart, lung, autoimmune) or have had pleural effusion in the past, do not underestimate regular medical examinations and ultrasound examinations. Early detection of changes allows for gentle treatment and prevents complications.
Precise care of the pleural space
Pleural cavity sonography is a gentle, fast and highly accurate way to sometimes get a clear answer to breathing difficulties or suspected pleural changes. Thanks to the sensitivity of ultrasound, we can detect even minimal effusion or other abnormalities often before they manifest as more serious symptoms, thus enabling an immediate and targeted solution.
At our clinic, we combine cutting-edge ultrasound technology with an individual approach, where each client feels safe and fully informed. Smooth, free breathing is the basis of vitality and everyday well-being. Regular monitoring of the pleural space helps keep your lungs in optimal condition and prevent complications. At Hello Beauty Clinic, we are ready to provide you with the best care - always with an emphasis on your comfort and health.
