Ultrasound of the gallbladder

Gallbladder ultrasound is one of the most commonly performed abdominal examinations. It is a quick, painless and accurate method that does not use any harmful radiation. At our clinic, we offer this examination in a modern environment with short waiting times. The entire process takes 15 to 30 minutes and you know the result immediately. If you are looking for a reliable gallbladder check, you have come to the right place.

The role of the gallbladder in digestion and why you should monitor it

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ under the liver that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. Bile is essential for the digestion of fats - when you eat, the gallbladder contracts and releases it into the small intestine. Gallbladder disorders are common and mainly include the formation of stones (cholelithiasis), inflammation (cholecystitis) or polyps. Many people have no symptoms for a long time. Problems appear suddenly in the form of an attack - sharp pain in the right lower abdomen, nausea or vomiting.

Regular ultrasound of the gallbladder allows you to detect these changes early. Often, adjusting your diet and lifestyle is enough to prevent acute complications or the need for surgery. Early prevention thus protects against unnecessary difficulties.

What changes does an ultrasound of the gallbladder most often reveal

Modern ultrasound devices provide a clear image of the gallbladder wall, contents, and surroundings. The doctor checks several key parameters during the examination.

Possible findings include:

  • Gallstones of various sizes and compositions
  • Acute or chronic inflammation of the wall
  • Polyps and other benign formations
  • Dilation of the bile ducts or the presence of sludge

Thanks to high resolution, we can detect even minor changes that are missed by other methods. At our clinic, we use the latest generation of devices for maximum accuracy.

Biliary tract examination

In addition to gallbladder ultrasound, we also offer a separate biliary tract sonography. These paths ensure the outflow of bile from the liver through the gallbladder to the small intestine and play a key role in the smooth digestion of fats.

This additional examination allows you to detect blockages (for example, a stone that has traveled from the gallbladder), widening of the paths (dilatation) in case of obstruction, inflammatory changes, strictures or other abnormalities. It often helps to explain symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, light stools, itchy skin or persistent pain in the liver area.

A biliary tract sonography is as painless, quick and radiation-free as a gallbladder examination. It requires similar preparation (fasting) and takes approximately 15–30 minutes. We often recommend it in combination with a gallbladder ultrasound or as a separate examination for specific problems.

Symptoms that indicate the need for examination

We recommend an ultrasound of the gallbladder especially in case of recurring problems after eating. Typical symptoms include sharp pain in the right hypochondrium, bloating, nausea or vomiting, which often occur after consuming fatty foods.

The risk of gallbladder problems is higher in women, overweight people, those who lose weight quickly or in cases where gallstones run in the family. A preventive examination will be appreciated by everyone over the age of 40 or those who use hormonal contraception for a long time.

A high-quality image of the gallbladder requires only minimal preparation. Before the examination, it is necessary to fast for at least 6 hours. The day before, avoid carbonated drinks and fatty foods. You can drink regular medications with a small amount of clean water. If you have specific health restrictions, please inform us of them when ordering.

Examination procedure

The gallbladder examination takes place in a calm and comfortable environment. You lie on an examination table on your back or slightly on your side, whichever allows for the best view. The doctor applies a transparent gel to the right side of your abdomen, which is completely harmless and easy to wash off.

Then, he slowly moves the ultrasound probe over your skin. The probe sends out ultrasound waves that bounce off internal structures and create a real-time image on the monitor. The doctor carefully examines the gallbladder from different angles to obtain the most accurate information. Sometimes, he may ask you to hold your breath for a short time or to change your position slightly – all for better visibility.

The whole process is completely painless. You will only feel a slight pressure from the probe and the coolness of the gel. No injections, no radiation.

The examination usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. After it is finished, you simply wipe the gel off with a tissue. The doctor will explain the results to you immediately on the spot and answer your questions. Overall, this gives you quick and reliable information about the condition of your gallbladder.
