Bladder ultrasound
Bladder ultrasound is a gentle, painless and quick examination. It provides a detailed view of this key organ of the urinary system without radiation exposure. At our clinic, we offer this examination as a separate service within preventive and diagnostic care. It takes 15 to 30 minutes and you know the results immediately. Ideal for those who are dealing with urination difficulties or want preventive screening.
What changes does a bladder ultrasound reveal
The examination provides a clear picture of the volume, shape, wall thickness, and amount of residual urine after urination. The doctor assesses the structure and any abnormalities.
Possible findings include:
- Wall inflammation
- Bladder stones
- Diverticles or polyps
- Wall thickening
- Residual urine (residual urine after voiding)
- Suspicious formations
In our clinic, we use only modern devices for high accuracy.

Why monitor the bladder
The bladder is a flexible muscular organ located in the lower abdomen, directly above the pubic bone. Its main function is to collect urine that comes from the kidneys through the ureters. Thanks to its elastic wall, it can adapt to the increasing volume of urine - from an empty state to a capacity of 400-600 ml in an adult.
Bladder disorders are among the common problems that affect men and women of different ages. They are often related to repeated inflammation, stone formation, diverticula, polyps or functional disorders (excessive activity, muscle weakness). Many of these conditions begin inconspicuously and for a long time without significant symptoms, but can gradually lead to chronic difficulties, repeated infections, incontinence or more serious complications.
Regular bladder ultrasound helps detect these changes at an early stage, which may not yet cause permanent damage. Early detection requires simple lifestyle changes, targeted treatment or prevention. This will prevent unnecessary complications and maintain comfortable and problem-free urination for a long time.
When is a bladder examination appropriate
Ultrasound is recommended for recurring urination problems. Typical symptoms include:
- Burning and cutting when urinating
- Urgent need to urinate even with a small amount of urine
- Frequent nighttime awakening to use the toilet
- Urine leakage
- Blood in the urine
- Feeling of incomplete emptying
- Repeated inflammations
- Lower abdominal pain
These problems affect women more often (due to a shorter urethra), men with prostate problems or patients with neurological diseases. The risk increases with repeated inflammations, diabetes or after pelvic surgery. Anyone with chronic conditions or over the age of 50 will appreciate a preventive check-up.
How to prepare
For a quality image, it is crucial to come with a full bladder. Drink 0.5–1 liter of still water an hour before the appointment and do not urinate.
You do not need to be fasting – a lighter meal is fine. The day before, avoid foods that cause bloating (legumes, carbonated drinks). If you have specific restrictions or are taking medications that affect urination, let us know when ordering. Preparation is simple and will ensure the most accurate result.
How is the bladder ultrasound performed
The examination is comfortable and takes place in private. You lie on your back on a bed. The doctor applies conductive gel to your lower abdomen. The probe gently moves over the skin and displays the bladder in real time. The doctor first examines the filled bladder, measures its volume and assesses the wall.
Then, he or she will ask you to urinate (the toilet is in the clinic). Upon your return, he will check the residual urine volume. The whole process is completely painless.
The ultrasound takes 15 to 30 minutes and the doctor will immediately explain the results, show you the images and answer your questions. In case of abnormalities, he will suggest further steps or a consultation with a urologist.
