Kidney ultrasound

At Hello Beauty Clinic, we are now performing a kidney ultrasound, which allows for a detailed examination of the kidneys and bladder without any radiation. This examination is completely painless, without radiation exposure, and provides an immediate detailed view of the kidneys. Thanks to modern equipment, the entire process takes only 15-30 minutes, and the doctor will discuss the results with you immediately after. It is an ideal choice for preventive screening and for specific problems - you will get information about your kidney health quickly and without unnecessary waiting.

Why are the kidneys so important and when to check them

The kidneys are a pair of organs located in the lumbar region on either side of the spine. They filter approximately 1,500-1,800 liters of blood every day, which means that the entire volume of blood passes through the kidneys many times a day. This complex process removes waste products and rids the body of excess toxins.

At the same time, the kidneys and adrenal glands carefully regulate the body's fluid balance, levels of key minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus) and acid-base balance. They are involved in stabilizing blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (a key hormonal system regulating blood pressure and the body's water and salt balance). They also produce vital hormones: erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow, and calcitriol - the active form of vitamin D, necessary for the absorption of calcium and the maintenance of healthy bones.

Many kidney disorders develop slowly and for a long time without any noticeable symptoms. Common ones include the formation of kidney stones, simple or complex cysts, inflammatory processes (pyelonephritis), kidney enlargement due to obstruction of the outflow or a gradual decrease in function leading to chronic kidney disease.

They are often detected incidentally during routine blood tests – for example, with increased creatinine, urea or electrolyte abnormalities. Or only in acute conditions such as renal colic, swelling, fatigue or high blood pressure that does not respond to treatment.

Regular kidney ultrasound allows you to detect these changes at an early stage, when irreversible damage has not yet occurred. Early detection is often sufficient for simple measures – sufficient fluid intake, diet adjustment (less salt, balanced protein intake), blood pressure control or initiation of specific treatment. This effectively prevents serious complications such as advanced kidney failure, the need for dialysis or transplantation. Prevention here represents a gentle and highly effective way of protecting long-term health.

What changes does a kidney ultrasound most often reveal

High-end ultrasound devices provide a clear picture of the size, shape, structure and blood supply to the kidneys. The doctor also checks the ureters and bladder.

Possible findings include:

  • Kidney stones
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Hydronephrosis (urinary obstruction)
  • Changes in size
  • Changes in shape/surface
  • Inflammation
  • Vascular changes

When is it appropriate to undergo an ultrasound

We recommend a kidney ultrasound especially in cases of recurring pain in the lumbar region, which can be dull or sharp and often worsens with movement. Other warning signs are changes in the urine - the presence of blood (hematuria), cloudiness, foam (signaling protein) or an unusual odor. Excessive urination or unexplained increases in blood pressure are also reasons for an examination.

The risk of kidney disease increases significantly in patients with diabetes, long-term high blood pressure or repeated urinary tract infections. It is also higher if there is a family history of kidney stones or chronic kidney disease. Preventive check-ups are definitely worth it for everyone over the age of 50, if they are taking medications that can put a strain on the kidneys (e.g. some analgesics, antirheumatic drugs or contrast agents), or if they are taking diuretics for a long time.

If your blood tests show abnormalities in creatinine, urea, electrolytes or minerals, a kidney ultrasound is the first and most gentle step to clarify the cause. Early examination helps detect problems before they become more serious symptoms, allowing for simple prevention or treatment.

Bladder Ultrasound

The bladder is an important part of the lower urinary tract. This flexible organ in the lower abdomen collects urine coming from the kidneys and allows for its controlled excretion.

Bladder ultrasound provides detailed information about its volume, shape, wall thickness and the amount of residual urine after urination. It helps to detect inflammation (cystitis), stones, diverticula, polyps, thickening of the wall or suspicious formations that may signal a more serious disease.

Common reasons for examining the bladder include:

  1. Burning and cutting during urination
  2. The urge to urinate even with a small amount of urine
  3. Frequent nighttime awakening to use the toilet
  4. Urine leakage
  5. Blood in the urine
  6. A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

These problems affect women more often (due to a shorter urethra), men with prostate problems or patients with neurological diseases.

At Hello Beauty Clinic, we perform a bladder ultrasound as a separate examination. If you wish to combine it with a kidney ultrasound, we will be happy to schedule both sonographies for you on the same date. However, each examination is charged separately. For a high-quality image, come with a full bladder – drink 0.5–1 liter of still water an hour before the appointment and do not urinate. The doctor will first examine the filled bladder from the lower abdomen, then ask you to urinate and check the residual volume.
