Mole check for children

Mole checks for children in Pilsen with a dermatoscope. A dermatologist specialised in paediatric dermatology, no referral, painless.

Most children are born with few moles, and more appear through childhood and adolescence. That is normal. A check with a dermatologist gives you peace of mind that all is well — and catches any change early.

When to have your child’s moles checked

  • a mole grows quickly, changes colour or shape, or looks different from the others,
  • a mole itches, bleeds or forms a scab,
  • your child has many moles or fair skin that burns easily,
  • they have a large congenital mole — worth watching over the long term,
  • there has been melanoma in the family.

Melanoma is fortunately rare in children. That is another reason to have moles checked by someone who knows what is usual in children, rather than worrying needlessly.

How the check goes

Your child undresses to their underwear and the doctor looks over the skin from head to toe. Suspicious moles are examined with a dermatoscope — a special magnifier with a light placed on the skin. It does not hurt and a parent stays throughout.

At the end the doctor tells you how the moles look, whether and when to come back, and recommends removal if needed.

How to protect children’s skin

  • Above all, avoid sunburn — sunburn in childhood raises the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.
  • In summer avoid the midday sun, wear a hat and a T-shirt, use a high-factor sunscreen and reapply it after swimming.
  • Look over your child’s skin now and then and notice new or changing moles.

Frequently asked questions

How often should my child have a mole check?

It depends on the number and appearance of the moles. After the examination the doctor tells you when to come back — usually regularly for children with many moles or a large congenital mole.

Is a new mole in a child a reason to worry?

Usually not — moles keep appearing through childhood. Do have it checked if it grows quickly, changes, bleeds or looks different from the others.

Do we need a referral?

No. You book the mole check yourself.
