Facial asymmetry - how to correct it without surgery

No face in the world is perfectly symmetrical, and symmetry alone is not a condition for attractiveness. However, there is a limit beyond which asymmetry becomes visible, bothersome, or affects how you feel. The good news is that even relatively pronounced facial asymmetry can be corrected without surgery in many cases. Aesthetic medicine today has tools that can visually balance the face, add volume where it is lacking, or suppress increased muscle activity on one side.

Why facial asymmetry occurs

Facial asymmetry usually has multiple causes at once. Some are congenital, others only manifest themselves during life.

Genetics and development play a crucial role. The bones of the skull, jaw and cheekbones do not always develop symmetrically. Minor differences in the structure of the skeleton are present in the vast majority of people and are completely natural.

Facial expressions and habits are another cause. Each of us uses the muscles of the face on one side more than the other. People who chew mainly on one side may notice that the asymmetry deepens over the years.

Aging accentuates the asymmetry. Loss of fatty tissue, a decrease in volume in the cheekbones or chin area and loss of skin elasticity usually do not occur equally on both sides of the face. As a result, asymmetry, which was previously barely noticeable, becomes more obvious with age.

Injuries can be another cause of more pronounced asymmetry. Fractures of facial bones or paralysis of muscles lead to changes that require an individual approach.

When is facial asymmetry a problem

A slight asymmetry is natural and aesthetically acceptable in most cases. However, there are situations when it makes sense to correct a more pronounced asymmetry.

These are cases where it is present:

  • Subjective dissatisfaction: If you feel that one side of the face looks "different"

  • Change over time: If a previously present slight asymmetry has become more pronounced

  • Functional asymmetry: For example, uneven lip movements or a drooping of one corner of the mouth

How aesthetic medicine addresses facial asymmetry

Correction of facial asymmetry without surgery works with several basic tools. Each of them has its own specifics and is used in different situations.

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid is the most commonly used tool in asymmetry correction. It allows you to add volume exactly where it is missing, thereby visually balancing both sides of the face.

Fillers are most often used in the cheekbone area, when one side has less volume than the other. Also in the chin area, where the asymmetrical shape or position of the tip of the chin creates the impression of an uneven face. Fillers are also applied to the lips, for example when one half of the lip is thinner or lower.

The result is immediate and natural. The effect usually lasts 6 to 12 months.

BTX preparations for the correction of muscle asymmetry

Facial asymmetry may not always be caused by a difference in volume. Very often, it is due to uneven muscle activity. One muscle is stronger, tighter, or more active than its counterpart on the other side.

BTX products can temporarily reduce the activity of an overworked muscle and thus restore balance. The most common areas of application are the chewing muscles in asymmetrical bruxism, the muscles responsible for an asymmetrical smile, or uneven eyebrow raising. Another area is around the eyes, where different muscle activity causes asymmetrical frowning or wrinkles on only one side.

The effect of BTX products begins gradually over 7 to 14 days. It usually lasts 4 to 6 months.

Combination of fillers and BTX

In many cases, a combination of both approaches brings the best results. BTX adjusts the muscle balance, and fillers even out volume differences. This combination is individually planned by the doctor based on a consultation and assessment of the condition of the face.

Frequently Asked Questions about Facial Asymmetry (Q&A)

Is facial asymmetry normal?

Yes. Everyone has some degree of asymmetry. It becomes a problem when it is significant or causes internal dissatisfaction.

How do I know if I have asymmetry caused by muscles or volume?

This assessment will be performed by a doctor during a consultation. In general, muscle asymmetry is manifested when the face moves, for example when smiling or frowning, while volume asymmetry is noticeable even when at rest.

Does facial asymmetry correction hurt?

The treatments are performed using fine needles or cannulas and are very well tolerated by most patients.

Can asymmetry worsen after treatment?

No, if the treatment is performed by an experienced doctor with detailed knowledge of facial anatomy. However, improperly performed treatment can accentuate the asymmetry. Therefore, choosing a qualified doctor is essential.

Is asymmetry correction suitable for younger patients?

Yes. Asymmetry caused by genetics or muscle imbalance can occur at any age and its correction is possible for clients aged 18 and over.

Facial harmony

The goal is to achieve a face that looks balanced, fresh and harmonious. The results are natural, unobtrusive and tailored to the specific face. Every person is different and it is an individual approach that distinguishes an excellent result from an average one.

If facial asymmetry bothers you or you have started to notice it more, the first step is a consultation. Our doctor will assess your condition and suggest a solution that makes sense for you.
