Neck and lymph node ultrasound for children
Swollen glands, a lump on the neck or a thyroid check for your child? Ultrasound in Pilsen with no referral and the result straight away.
Have you felt little lumps on your child’s neck? Swollen lymph nodes are very common in children — usually after a cold or a sore throat — and mostly go down by themselves. When they persist or grow, an ultrasound shows quickly and painlessly what they look like. In Pilsen, with no referral and with the result straight away.
What we examine on the neck
- Lymph nodes – their size, shape and inner structure, from which the doctor judges whether watching them is enough.
- Thyroid – when the paediatrician or endocrinologist recommends it, or when thyroid disease runs in the family.
- Salivary glands – swelling below the ear or under the chin.
- Lumps and swellings on the neck and under the skin – cysts, for example.
When not to wait
Contact your paediatrician as soon as possible if a node grows quickly, is hard and does not move, is larger than about 2 cm, or comes with long-lasting fevers, night sweats or weight loss. An ultrasound then helps decide what to do next.
A neck scan needs no preparation, is quick and does not hurt. A parent stays with the child throughout.

The scans are done by our radiologists MUDr. Václava Vicari and MUDr. Jiří Rezek, who also work at the University Hospital Pilsen.

Frequently asked questions
Are swollen lymph nodes in children dangerous?
Usually not. Nodes swell with ordinary infections and go down within a few weeks. An ultrasound helps tell a node that is simply reacting to an infection from one that needs watching.
Does my child need any preparation for a neck scan?
No. Comfortable clothes with an open neckline are all it takes.
Do we need a referral?
No. You book the examination yourself — do bring any report from your paediatrician.
