How the examination goes
Your child lies on the couch, the doctor puts gel on the skin and moves the ultrasound probe over it. It does not hurt, involves no radiation and usually takes 15–30 minutes. A parent stays with the child the whole time — for anyone under 18 the presence of a parent or guardian is a matter of course.
A favourite toy, a book or a cartoon on the phone helps younger children. The calmer the child, the quicker it is over. The doctor explains the result straight after the scan, so you can take it to your paediatrician right away.
What we examine in children
- Abdomen – recurring tummy ache, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas.
- Kidneys and urinary tract – recurring urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder check-ups.
- Neck and lymph nodes – swollen glands, thyroid, salivary glands, a lump on the neck.
- Soft tissues and groin – a lump under the skin, swelling, a suspected hernia.

Preparation
The preparation is the same as for adults:
- Abdomen: on an empty stomach — nothing to eat for at least 6 hours, and no fizzy drinks or heavy meals the day before.
- Bladder: with a full bladder — drink 0.5–1 litre of still water an hour before the scan and do not go to the toilet.
- Neck, lymph nodes, soft tissues, groin: no preparation.
Bring any reports from your paediatrician or earlier examinations.

Do I need a referral from the paediatrician?
No. You can book the ultrasound yourself. If your paediatrician recommended it, bring their report with you.
Is ultrasound safe for children?
Yes. Ultrasound uses no ionising radiation, does not hurt and can safely be repeated — which is why it is the first-choice imaging examination for children.
Can I stay with my child?
Yes, a parent stays with the child the whole time. For anyone under 18 the presence of a parent or guardian is a matter of course.
When will we know the result?
Straight after the examination. The doctor explains the findings and recommends what to do next — most often a follow-up with your paediatrician.
Is it covered by health insurance?
