Kidney and urinary tract ultrasound for children

Kidney and bladder ultrasound for children in Pilsen – for recurring urinary tract infections or a kidney check-up. No referral, painless.

A kidney and bladder ultrasound is one of the most common examinations in children. It shows the size, shape and position of the kidneys and the state of the bladder — painlessly, without radiation and, in Pilsen, with no referral.

When to consider a kidney ultrasound

  • recurring urinary tract infections,
  • a kidney check-up after a finding on a pregnancy or maternity-ward scan, such as a dilated renal pelvis,
  • pain in the lower back or problems passing urine,
  • following up an earlier finding on the kidneys or bladder.

A fever with pain when passing urine, especially in a small child, belongs with the paediatrician first — a urinary tract infection needs treating straight away. The ultrasound then helps find out why the infections keep coming back.

Preparation: a full bladder

The preparation is the same as for adults: the bladder can only be seen well when it is full. Drink 0.5–1 litre of still water an hour before the scan and do not go to the toilet. There is no need to fast, but it helps to avoid bloating foods and fizzy drinks the day before.

The scan usually takes 15–30 minutes. Your child lies on their back and then on their side while the doctor moves the probe with gel. A parent stays with them throughout. The doctor can also check how much urine stays in the bladder after emptying it.
