Abdominal ultrasound for children
Abdominal ultrasound for children in Pilsen: liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas and kidneys. No referral, painless, results straight away.
Tummy ache is one of the most common complaints in childhood. It is usually harmless, but when it keeps coming back, an abdominal ultrasound shows quickly and painlessly how the organs look. In Pilsen, with no referral and with the result straight after the scan.
When an abdominal ultrasound makes sense
- recurring or long-lasting tummy ache,
- nausea, bloating or loss of appetite that does not go away,
- a liver, gallbladder or spleen check recommended by the paediatrician,
- following up an earlier finding.
Sudden severe tummy pain, pain with fever or vomiting, or a hard, rigid tummy always belongs with a doctor or the emergency department straight away — not at a planned examination.
What the examination shows
The doctor looks at the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, spleen, pancreas and kidneys, assesses their size and structure, and notes any enlarged lymph nodes or free fluid in the abdomen.
Preparation: an empty stomach
The preparation is the same as for adults: nothing to eat for at least 6 hours, and no fizzy drinks or heavy meals the day before, because gas in the bowel hides the organs. Regular medication can be taken with a little plain water.
The scan usually takes 15–30 minutes and does not hurt. A parent stays with the child throughout and the doctor explains the result straight away.

The scans are done by our radiologists MUDr. Václava Vicari and MUDr. Jiří Rezek, who also work at the University Hospital Pilsen.

Frequently asked questions
How long must my child not eat?
At least 6 hours, as for adults. It also helps to avoid fizzy drinks and heavy meals the day before.
Does an abdominal ultrasound hurt?
No. The doctor simply moves the probe with gel over the tummy, sometimes pressing gently for a moment to see the organs better.
Do we need a referral?
No, you book the examination yourself. Do bring any reports from your paediatrician.
