Polynucleotides

In recent years, aesthetic medicine has increasingly moved towards methods that truly regenerate the skin. One of the most prominent is polynucleotide biostimulation, also known as salmon DNA rejuvenation. At our clinic, we use the high-quality Italian product Plenhyage for this purpose. We will explain to you what polynucleotides are, how they work and what to expect from the treatment.

What are polynucleotides and where do they come from

Polynucleotides are highly purified DNA fragments, most often obtained from salmon milt. Thanks to the high genetic similarity to human DNA, the body accepts them without a rejection reaction and easily uses them in natural regenerative processes.

The raw material undergoes a multi-stage purification process in which proteins, fats and other biological residues are removed. The resulting substance is sterile, stable and safe for use in human medicine. The ultra-pure gel usually does not trigger any allergic reactions, even in people who are allergic to fish. In this case, however, we do not recommend the application of polynucleotides.

How polynucleotides act on the skin

Polynucleotides function as signalling molecules that activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for the production of collagen and elastin. Unlike fillers based on hyaluronic acid, they do not add volume to the skin but stimulate it to renew itself.

After injection into the skin, several processes are triggered simultaneously in the dermis: collagen production increases, hydration improves and cellular renewal is supported. The effect on the skin is manifested not only on its surface but truly changes its internal structure. The result is firmer, more hydrated and more even skin that retains natural facial expressions.

The preparation Plenhyage: what distinguishes it

Plenhyage is a clinically tested preparation based on polymerised polynucleotides that is used to reduce wrinkles and improve tone and skin irregularities. At our clinic we choose it for its proven efficacy and high safety profile.

The preparation exists in several concentrations according to the intensity of the desired effect and the treated area. Lower concentrations are chosen for fine wrinkles and sensitive areas such as the eye area, while higher concentrations target more pronounced skin irregularities on the face, neck or body. The choice of the appropriate variant is always determined by the doctor according to the condition of the individual client’s skin.

What skin problems polynucleotides address

Polynucleotides help with fine wrinkles, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone and overall skin fatigue. The treatment is also suitable for sensitive areas around the eyes, where classic fillers are often not the ideal choice.

Typical areas of use include:

  • Fine wrinkles and lines on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth

  • Loss of elasticity and sagging of the skin of the face and neck

  • Uneven skin tone and minor acne scars

  • Overall tired, dehydrated or thinned skin

The method is also suitable as a complement to other treatments, because it improves the quality of the skin, on which further procedures such as microneedling or device-based care then work better.

How polynucleotide treatment proceeds

The treatment is carried out in the form of gentle injections into the middle layer of the skin, similar to mesotherapy. Before application the skin is thoroughly cleaned; for more sensitive clients an anaesthetic cream is used for greater comfort.

The procedure itself lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the extent of the treated area. It is well tolerated; after the procedure mild redness or slight swelling at the injection site may appear, which usually subsides within one to two days. Most clients return to their normal routine practically immediately after the treatment.

Polynucleotide treatment is suitable for clients who want to improve skin quality without changing its volume or shape. It is also suitable for sensitive, thinned or dehydrated skin for which classic fillers are not the ideal choice.

The treatment is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the case of an acute skin infection or in the event of an allergy to fish products. Before the procedure a consultation therefore always takes place, at which the doctor assesses the state of health and the suitability of the method.

A modern and gentle treatment

Polynucleotides represent a modern and gentle way to restore vitality and firmness to the skin without surgery or the addition of volume. Thanks to the preparation Plenhyage we offer a treatment with proven efficacy and a high safety profile that gradually stimulates the skin to renew itself. If you are looking for a natural way of skin rejuvenation, a consultation with our doctor will help you find out whether this method is the right choice for your skin type.

Most frequent questions (FAQ)

Does polynucleotide treatment hurt?

The procedure is well tolerated; it consists of gentle injections into the middle layer of the skin. For greater comfort an anaesthetic cream may be used before application.

How many polynucleotide treatments are needed for a visible result?

For the best result we recommend a series of two to three treatments at intervals of three to four weeks. The first improvement is noticeable within a few days; the full effect appears gradually over four to six weeks after the last application in the series.

Is treatment with salmon DNA safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, polynucleotides rank among the gentlest methods of biostimulation.

What is the difference between polynucleotides and a hyaluronic acid filler?

A hyaluronic acid filler gives the skin immediate volume; polynucleotides, on the other hand, stimulate the skin’s own regenerative processes without changing volume. Polynucleotides address skin quality, while a filler addresses shape and volume. Both methods can be combined as needed.
